The region was created in 1970 and at the time, it consisted of three districts and 18 local authorities. However, in 1988, the existing 18 local authorities were recombined into 17 administrative Metropolitan, Municipals and Districts.
According to 2010 population and housing census, the region has a land area of 9,826sq km square kilometres and a total population of 2,107,209 out of which 998,409 are males and1,108,800 are females. Central Region with Cape Coast as its capital has a coastline of 168km stretching from Nyanyano in the east to Komenda in the west.
